The Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé, White Passito, Red Passito and Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

Production Area

The production area of Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI is within the entire territory of the Province of Benevento, in the Campania region.

Blends

White, red and rosé wines with the Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards, in a business environment, with one or more red/white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.

Description of product typologies

Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from pale straw-yellow to amber-yellow in colour; it is floral and fruity on the nose, with notes of white fruit; on the palate it ranges from dry to sweet, it is fresh and smooth, with a slightly fruity flavour. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from pale ruby-red to garnet in colour, depending on the grape variety; the nose is full, dry or slightly sweet, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit; it is dry and sapid on the palate, with good body. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from pale to deep pink in colour, depending on the type of vinification and grape variety; it presents delicate fruity fragrances on the nose; on the palate it is dry, harmonious and fresh. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI Passito Bianco is golden yellow or amber in colour; floral fragrances and fruity notes alternate on the nose; on the palate it is amiable or sweet, well-balanced and with good body. Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is deep red to garnet in colour, varying in intensity; the nose offers floral and fruit sensations; on the palate it is amiable or sweet, well-balanced and with good body. Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI Novello, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red in colour; its fragrance is floral and fruity on the nose; on the palate it is dry or mouth-filling and balanced.

Grape variety specifications

The Benevento or Beneventano PGI, with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Benevento region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, can contribute, pure or combined, to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. Benevento PGI or Beneventano PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the grape variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
